It is important for the breast to be proportional to the shoulder width, chest circumference, waist and hip circumference measurements. Surgical intervention to increase the volume of the breast is called breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty). Breast augmentation surgery can be performed on patients who have a difference in volume between the two breasts or who have had breast tissue after mastectomy and who need breast reconstruction.
There are several treatments to increase breat, but most are either ineffective or unsafe. Hormone-containing creams and injections used for breast augmentation have been proven to be unsafe as they may lead to the development of cancer, particularly breast and uterine cancer, due to the irregular increase in cell division. Today, the only safe method for breast augmentation is the use of a silicone breast prosthesis.
Silicone breast prostheses are manufactured in many different volumes and shapes. The structural features of silicone prostheses are similar. The silicone gel, which gives the texture of the breast tissue, is wrapped in a silicone containing envelope. There are also prostheses that can be inflated with a wrapped serum or a mixture of serum and gel. The prosthesis to be used is selected by taking the patient’s request into consideration after the examination of the patient. Prostheses are produced in round or anatomical (drop) form.
Breast prostheses are placed under the muscles under the breast (pectoral muscle), under the breast tissue and under the membrane covering the pectoral muscle or the partial part under the muscle, and the partial section is placed under the breast tissue. The most important factor is the amount of breast tissue that will cover the patient’s prosthesis. Although the name of breast surgery under the name of the operation is under the breast tissue in the operation area. For this reason, milk glands and milk ducts are not affected and breastfeeding is allowed during the postoperative period.
General anaesthesia is applied in the breast augmentation surgery and the operation takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. Under the breast, approximately 3.5-4 cm incision is made on the under-breast line and prostheses are placed and leaves an minimal scar. Other appropriate incision sites are the nipple (areola) and the underarm (axilla). 6-8 hours after the operation, the patient can stand up with the effect of anaesthesia drugs. 1 day hospitalization is recommended. For 2 months after the operation, excessive movement of the chest muscles should be avoided. Usual activity could be presumed within 3-5 days. A special bra is recommended for support in the first 2 months.
